James Malloch Taylor
Jim Taylor is an award winning architect with two decades of completed work at diverse scales and locations.
Following a year spent at Michael Rotondi's office in Los Angeles, Jim started his professional career at Peter Pennoyer Architects in 1999 and was made a partner in 2014. His work at PPA was distributed widely, from shingled houses off the coast of Maine, to assisting the production of a successful condominium building on New York's Upper East Side.
In spite of their broad range, Jim's projects share common traits. The designs aim both to embody the client and to draw from their personality. The buildings themselves show an unwavering attention to quality.
As a designer of buildings, Jim sees no contradiction in embracing new technologies while striving for mastery of design by hand. In many cases his work profits from both. His interest in CAD and 3D printing found its expression at PPA in designs for door hardware that drew inspiration from colonial molding profiles and the faceted planes of Czech Cubist architecture. The first drawings were done in pen and ink wash, and the final product milled on a 5-Axis CNC router.
Over the years Jim has developed a rigorous technique for communicating his designs to contractors and vendors, supported by his enthusiasm for engaging with the construction process in the field.
Jim Taylor was educated in England and at Edinburgh University in Scotland, where he completed his Master's Degree with first class honors. He has lectured at several universities and institutions across the US, and has won awards for his projects. His work has been published widely. Jim lives with his wife Anik Pearson and their two children in New York's East Village and on the south shore of Long Island.
